The Applied Design Group is one of the active and specialized divisions of the Faculty of Mechanical and Energy Engineering at Shahid Beheshti University. Its mission is to advance education and research in key areas of mechanical engineering, with a focus on solid mechanics, dynamics, control, vibrations, and mechatronics. The group offers graduate-level courses in Mechanical Engineering – Applied Design (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) and Mechatronics (M.Sc.), and its faculty members supervise the theses and dissertations of graduate students.
The group currently consists of 15 faculty members and is supported by a range of well-equipped educational and research laboratories, including:
  • Dynamics and Vibrations Laboratory
  • Dynamics and Vibrations Laboratory
  • Composite Materials and Smart Structures Laboratory
The Composite Materials and Smart Structures Laboratory provides facilities for the fabrication, testing, and analysis of advanced composite systems. The laboratory is equipped for fabricating fiber-reinforced polymer composites using both hand lay-up and Vacuum Infusion Process (VIP). It also supports the preparation of test specimens and performing standard mechanical tests to determine the mechanical properties of composite materials.
The lab includes a range of additive manufacturing equipment, such as FDM, DLP, and pellet-based 3D printers, enabling the fabrication of polymer and composite components with different geometries and mechanical characteristics.
Research activities in this laboratory cover a wide set of advanced topics, including:
  • Structural health monitoring of composite components
  • Numerical simulation, analysis and evaluation of auxetic structures
  • Fatigue life assessment of composite bone-inspired scaffolds
  • Design, evaluation, and long-term reliability assessment of composite repair systems for damaged pipelines
  • Development and analysis of metal-matrix composites for additive manufacturing applications
With its combination of fabrication, testing, and modeling tools, the laboratory serves as a center for research and education in modern composite materials and smart structural systems.
  • Dynamics and Vibrations Laboratory
  • Dynamics and Vibrations Laboratory
  • Composite Materials and Smart Structures Laboratory
  • Control Laboratory
  • Robotics Laboratory
  • Non-Destructive Testing Laboratory
  • Workshops for machining, welding, and automotive mechanics
These facilities provide a strong foundation for academic research, industrial collaboration, and interdisciplinary projects.
Since 2020, the group has also been responsible for admitting undergraduate students in Industrial Engineering, reflecting its broader interdisciplinary approach and its effort to respond to emerging academic and industrial needs.
In addition, the group is planning to establish a Pipeline Studies Center and a Pig Testing Laboratory as part of its medium-term development goals. These initiatives aim to strengthen the group’s role in industry-focused research and to expand its collaborations with relevant sectors.
